Buzz of DOT's saws echoes long after trees have fallen
D esperate for a good night's sleep, Mike Cain nailed a piece of plywood over his bedroom window and rolled down a metal hurricane shutter to block out noise. Cain barricaded his windows the day he was jolted out of bed by the whirring sound of saws cutting down melaleuca trees at the edge of his back yard. His bedroom and 16 other homes in his Waterford neighborhood in Ivanhoe are about 120 feet from Interstate 75. Constant highway traffic noise has disrupted the Davie neighborhood for more than a year.

Miami man charged with stalking his ex-girlfriend via fax machine
K evin McLaren told police he was upset when his girlfriend ended their relationship. So, McLaren allegedly started sending her explicit and threatening faxes. His girlfriend called police and McLaren was arrested on a charge of stalking -- via fax machine, police said.

Pines police increase patrols around synagogue
F earing violence toward Israelis overseas could reach Jews in Pembroke Pines, the city's police department has increased patrols around Temple Beth Emet. Police Chief Martin Rahinsky has told his officers to make frequent checks of the temple at 10801 Pembroke Rd. The Street Crime/Gang Unit also has been assigned to police the temple.

Chamber changes tune on Miramar charter amendments
T he Miramar/Pembroke Chamber of Commerce has backed off its position opposing seven charter amendments being proposed by Miramar City Commissioner Dan Lewis and supporters. The chamber's 14-member board of directors, which had voted to oppose the amendments and a petition to put them on the ballot, now plans to sponsor an ``educational forum'' on the issue. The forum would be held when the petition has enough verified signatures to go to a November ballot, said chamber chairman Kevin Connor.

72 homes approved on site once planned for mall
M into Builders, the developer of TownGate, will build 72 homes on part of the property once slated for a 1.3 million square foot shopping mall at the northeast corner of Dykes Road and Pines Boulevard.

MIRAMAR Appliance theft: A burglar stole appliances from a house in the 15000 block of Southwest 46th Street sometime between May 3 and Monday, police said. A representative for Landstar Homes told police a refrigerator, a range and two microwaves were stolen.

Building supply stores are closing Pines, Davie locations affected
T wo building supply companies that opened in the early days of West Broward's building boom are pulling up stakes in the next several months. Builders Square will shut its Davie store at 8944 State Road 84 in late June. Scotty's is closing locations at 8333 Pines Blvd. in Pembroke Pines and at 6931 NW 88th Ave. in Tamarac.

Pines church office moves to roomier operations base
he Pines Baptist Church is moving its office to a building that congregants bought last month. The 200-member congregation raised $90,000 in 10 weeks to put a down payment on the property and refurbish it. The office should be up and running by Friday, said the Rev. Steve Nerger, pastor at Pines Baptist.

Lifeguards sought for renovated city pool Four part-time positions open
A fter four years of busing Dania children outside the city to swim, the Modello Park Pool is ready to reopen June 1 for this summer's swimming program. But the city is having trouble finding four part-time lifeguards to work at the $162,000 renovated pool, at 800 NW Second St., said City Manager Michael Smith.

Builder revises annexation request
Developer Ron Bergeron has withdrawn for now his request to have 50 acres in unincorporated Broward annexed into Pembroke Pines. Instead, he wants the commission to vote sometime in the future on the annexation request along with a proposal to change the property from industrial to residential and commercial, said Don Hall, Bergeron's attorney.

Police Report
MIRAMAR Resident shot: A gunman shot a man in the leg during an armed robbery at a house in the 3400 block of Bahama Drive about April 30. The man was treated and released from the hospital, police said. The gunman and accomplice walked into the house about 8:35 p.m. and fired two shots, hitting the man in the leg with one of them as the man lay on a couch. The two men then robbed the man of about $4,000 in cash, a cellular telephone and a bracelet. The robbers drove away in a 1996 Toyota Camry that was being rented by a woman staying at the house. The woman was present during the robbery, but was not hurt. The value of the stolen property was not determined at the time of the report.
