M
iramar is celebrating its 41st birthday this month with Miramar Days '96 -- two weeks of events that offer something for every age group.

This year, for the first time, Universal Studios, producers of the children's cable television netword Nickelodeon, will hold a ``Game Lab.'' Children and adults will be chosen from the audience to participate in Nickelodeon-style games. The show will be from 1 to 3 p.m. May 18 at Miramar High School, 3601 SW 89th Ave. Tickets are $4.

Several thousand people are expected to attend Miramar Days, which resumed in 1992 after an absence of several years.

The festivities will begin tonight with a ``Tennis 'n Fun'' tournament at 7 p.m. at Lakeshore Park, 8501 S. Sherman Cir. The grand finale -- a fireworks display -- will be held at 9 p.m. at Lakeshore Park.

Other activities include:

  • Basketball hotshot contest, 7 p.m. Friday at Lakeshore Park.

  • 10K Run, 7 p.m. Saturday at Shirley Branca Park, 6900 Miramar Pkwy.

  • Miramar Days Pageant, featuring 140 contestants, noon Saturday at Miramar Civic Center, 6920 SW 35th St.

  • Calypso Festival, 6:30 p.m. May 17 at Perry Park/Wellman Field, Southwest 68th Avenue at Southwest 34th Street.

  • Miami Dolphins vs. City All-Stars Softball Game, 7 p.m. May 17 at Perry Park/Wellman Field. Ten Dolphins who have not yet been named will compete against city employees (no department heads will be playing). An Autograph session -- with the Dolphins not the city employees -- will follow the game.

  • Senior activities, including food, music, bingo and entertainment, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 18 at the Miramar Senior Center, 7667 Venetian St.

  • Parade featuring floats, cars, horses, bagpipes and search-and-rescue dogs, 10 a.m. May 18, starting at 64th Avenue and Miramar Parkway and proceeding west on Miramar Parkway.

  • The ``Main Event'' at 5 p.m. May 18 at Lakeshore Park with Tux 'n Tunes D.J., game and food booths and rides. The pageant finals will follow at 5:30 p.m., and the fireworks display at 9 p.m. Bleacher seating is limited, so those attending the fireworks should bring chairs and blankets.

Everything is free and open to the public except the Nickelodeon Game Lab.
