Pines principal likes to see kids safe, successful, happy

  • Name: Joseph M. Schapiro.

  • New assignment: Pembroke Lakes Elementary School, 11251 Taft St., Pembroke Pines.

  • Age: 49.

  • Birthplace: New York, N.Y.

  • Family: Widower with 24-year-old twin boys.

  • Career: Schapiro is ending his 26th year in Broward County as an educator. Between 1970 and 1974, he was a teacher at Charles Drew Elementary in Pompano Beach. After leaving Drew, he taught at Flamingo Elementary in Davie for six years. In 1980, Schapiro became an assistant principal at Nob Hill Elementary in Sunrise. After two years there, he spent three years as principal of Peters Elementary School in Plantation. Between 1985 and 1987, Schapiro served as director of elementary education in the school district's central-area office. For the past nine years, he has been principal at Miramar Elementary School.

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut; master's in education from Temple University, Philadelphia; and certification in administration and supervision from Barry University, North Miami.

  • Subjects taught: All subjects in elementary education.

  • Reasons for becoming an educator: ``I had the opportunity to be in the National Teacher Corps in Philadelphia, and loved it so much that I decided to stay in education. I like to see kids safe, successful and happy.''

  • Philosophy on education: ``I have always lived by the motto, `Working for Children.' And what I expect from people who work with me is prime time. If the kids are here from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., let's give them the best we can during that time.''

  • Goal for Pembroke Lakes: ``I would like to initiate a postal system to encourage the students to do more creative writing.''
