Homeowners seek leafy noise barrier
D esperate for a good night's sleep, Mike Cain nailed a piece of plywood over his bedroom window and rolled down a metal hurricane shutter to block out noise. Cain barricaded his windows the day he was jolted out of bed by the whirring sound of saws cutting down melaleuca trees at the edge of his back yard. His bedroom and 16 other homes in his Waterford neighborhood in Ivanhoe are about 120 feet from Interstate 75. Constant highway traffic noise has disrupted the Davie neighborhood for more than a year.

Citizen patrol proving valuable Crime curbed in Bonaventure
F or three months, Hannah Patenotte has patrolled the dark streets of Bonaventure. A month ago Patenotte, a volunteer with the Broward Sheriff's Office's Citizen Observer Patrol (COP), spotted a group of young people standing around a red jeep in a condominium parking lot on Lakeview Drive.

Davie residents protest proposal for homeless shelter
W estern Davie residents were outraged to learn that 15 acres in their rural neighborhood had been proposed as a site for a new homeless shelter in Broward. ``I don't think western Davie is the appropriate place for a homeless shelter,'' said Debbie Apolinario, one of several area residents who are writing letters in protest. ``My kids roam the streets freely and I don't have to worry. I don't want my kids outside playing if there is a homeless shelter down the street.''

Plantation students drink in praise for noteworthy posters about water
I n honor of National Drinking Water Week, the city of Plantation gave awards to students who illustrated posters about the importance of water. The citywide first-place winner was Heather Hoeffer, 9, a fourth-grader at St. Gregory School. Her poster shows children fishing and hooking debris instead of fish, while overhead the sun and clouds are crying.

24-hour alcohol OKd for Pembroke Park Bar patrons no longer must clear out at 6 a.m. Saturday
P atrons of Pembroke Park businesses that sell alcoholic beverages now can drink 24 hours on Saturday without having to go to a nearby city. On Wednesday, Pembroke Park town commissioners unanimously approved an ordinance that allows bars, lounges and other establishments that serve alcohol to stay open between 6 and 7 a.m. Saturdays. Before the new ordinance, those businesses had to close during that hour.

Miami man accused in electronic stalking case He sent threatening faxes to his ex-girlfriend, police say
K evin McLaren told police he was upset when his girlfriend ended their relationship. So, McLaren allegedly started sending her explicit and threatening faxes. His girlfriend called police and McLaren was arrested on a charge of stalking -- via fax machine, police said.

School Board names 8 to posts at Nova
Broward County School Board members approved eight personnel appointments Tuesday for the Nova Schools in Davie. The moves are part of the public school district's effort to redesign its four Nova schools, which include a high school, a middle school and two elementary schools.

Indian Trace chooses counsel
Free work pays off. The Indian Trace Community Development District Board of Supervisors last week decided to hire a new bond counsel, if all the details work out. The firm would be Ruden, McCloskey Smith, Schuster & Russell, which has been working for free for the district since last summer.

COOPER CITY Burglars spotted: A woman who lives on the 5100 block of Southwest 93rd Avenue told police she saw two youths take a bicycle out of her neighbors' carport.

LaCosta homeowners to have competing meetings
T he fireworks will be popping in Bonaventure this week at two separate meetings of competing homeowner groups in LaCosta, where tempers are running hot these days. LaCosta is the troubled subdivision where only half of the planned homes have been built. Two developers claim they are going to finish the project, but there's a bankruptcy filing on the part of a third developer that's complicating the situation. One homeowners' meeting has been organized by LaCosta resident Barbara Shanahan for 8:30 p.m. Monday. Shanahan is aligned with developer Arnold DiGregorio. The other meeting, organized by LaCosta resident Marvin Edelstein, will take place at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Edelstein says developer Don Green will attend this meeting. Both meetings are at the Bonaventure Town Center Club, 16690 Saddle Club Rd., Bonaventure.

Police Report
COOPER CITY Purse stolen: A purse was taken from a car while its owner was celebrating Founder's Day at Brian Piccolo Park, 9501 Sheridan St., on April 27. The leather purse, which contained a checkbook, three credit cards and a small amount of cash, was stolen from the parking lot between 1 and 2:30 p.m. The owner believes she might have left the 1993 Dodge Caravan's passenger-side sliding glass window open.

Builder supply stores closing in W. Broward
T wo building supply companies that opened in the early days of West Broward's building boom are pulling up stakes in the next several months. Builders Square will shut its Davie store at 8944 State Road 84 in late June. Scotty's is closing locations at 8333 Pines Blvd. in Pembroke Pines and at 6931 NW 88th Ave. in Tamarac.
