Photos by MIKE STOCKER / Herald Staff AN ANGEL SOARS: Spectators atop a high-rise north of Sunrise Boulevard get an up-close look as a member of the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels flight team whizzes past.

`Awesome!' say crowds as air & sea show soars
From bicycles and Roller Blades and shouldertops, a wall-to-wall mass of people gave a collective cheer Saturday as the first formation flew over the 1996 Shell Air & Sea Show. Then came a collective laugh.

Parents say ethnic tensions persist in Broward schools
Fearful that ethnic tensions are approaching explosive levels at several Broward County schools, a group of concerned residents and parents say they plan to ask school officials this week for more cultural sensitivity in the classroom.

Doctors depend on parents' judgment But Bush case sends red flags
When Kathy Bush recited her daughter's symptoms, her pediatrician and dozens of specialists believed her -- just as doctors believe millions of parents every day. Now Bush is accused of inflicting eight years of chronic, debilitating illness on her daughter, Jennifer, and in the process, duping doctors on a list as long as a stethoscope.

Get high marks for effectiveness Four Broward lawmakers are ranked among the most effective members of the Legislature in The Herald's annual performance evaluation of all 160 senators and representatives.

Sinkhole homeowners may get help

8-year-old's death natural, experts say
The death of an 8-year-old boy who died Friday has been ruled a natural death by the Broward medical examiner's office. The boy was not breathing when rescue workers arrived at his home in the 500 block of Northeast 20th Street about 5:20 p.m., police said.

DEBBY SANDERSON R-Fort Lauderdale 1996 House rank: * * * (1995 rank: * *) Sanderson, Broward's only Republican House member, is also one of three Broward lawmakers on the House budget subcommittee for human services. The good news here is that the House didn't cut programs as much as the Senate. The bad news is that the budget cut programs by $400 million.

HOW THE RANKINGS WERE DONE To rate the effectiveness of Broward legislators, The Herald selected eight observers from diverse backgrounds. Standards used for the rankings include: Effectiveness at passing legislation beneficial to the state, not a particular interest group.

THE SENATE
JIM SCOTT R-Fort Lauderdale 1996 Senate rank: 2 (1995 rank: 1) The Senate was Scott's stage, from his advocacy of statewide cable-TV coverage to his order that senators stop eating on the lobbyists' credit cards -- a change in Capitol culture considered unthinkable before the session began and something the House speaker couldn't do.

THE HOUSE
ANNE MACKENZIE D-Fort Lauderdale 1996 House rank: 8 (1995 rank: 5) Mackenzie has evolved from an idealistic liberal to a pragmatic player on the House leadership team. When she talks, everyone listens, but chances are it's not about Florida's future but the mechanics of moving the next bill on the calendar. She's a tactician. She helps set the agenda. And she can kill your bill ``Black Flag dead,'' as they say in Tallahassee.
