MOTHERHOOD, PART II
Here are some facts and figures about grandparents who become parents a second time.
In Broward, there are 4,500 grandparents raising about 5,800 grandchildren. Nearly half of those children are under 10 years old.
About 7 percent of these households have two or more kids.
More than half of the grandparents heading these households do not have a high school diploma. Only 1 percent of them have a four-year college degree.
Most of the families doing this are poor or somewhat poor.
More than two-thirds of Broward grandparents raising grandchildren earned less than the 1990 median Broward household income of $30,571. A third of the households had an income of less than $10,000. About one in four of the households had income above $40,000.
About half of the grandparents raising kids are women who do not have a husband in the house. Another 10 percent are men without a woman in the house. The remaining 40 percent have both husband and wife in the house.
