Pines baseball players show winning moves vs. Marlins

osh Newman drove in a run and scored one for the Rockies in a West Pembroke Pines Optimist Coach Pitch baseball game against the Marlins May 4 at Silver Lakes South.

Justo Almodovar went two for two and threw a runner out at first base. Left fielder Danny Crespo stopped every ball his way.
Pembroke Pines Fast-Pitch Softball

The Delta Blue Angels' Heather Clark and Sandi Gicobbe recorded the final out with the bases loaded to end an exciting extra-inning game against the Pink Panthers, 13-12, April 20 in Midgets (ages 8 to 10) at Fletcher Park.

Amanda Pitofsky was two for two with an RBI. Corinne Melton scored two runs and struck out two batters in the extra inning to help lead the victorious Blue Angels. Jessica Metzel scored three runs for the Pink Panthers, and Shayna Vumbaco pitched a no-hit, shutout inning and scored twice.
Pembroke Pines Little League

D.J. Moorhead was three for five with three runs, two RBI and a double to lead the White Sox (13-0) over Southwest Broward Junior Athletic Association No. 7, 9-3, in the Senior League (ages 14 and 15) April 29 at Maxwell Park.

Jon Moyer was two for four with three RBI. Moyer also pitched three innings, striking out nine and allowing no walks and no earned runs. Winning pitcher Skip Wiley struck out six in four innings, allowing no hits and no earned runs. Wiley went two for three with a triple and a run.

kees, 4-0, April 22. David Mitchell drove in two runs, and Mike Babecki stole three bases, had a hit and scored a run. Wiley was three for four with two doubles. Winning pitcher Mike Stanley went the distance for the shutout, tossing a one-hitter. He walked three batters.

  • In Coach Pitch (ages 6 to 8), the Rangers improved to 14-0-1 with a 28-5 victory over the Red Sox May 2. Left fielder Andrew Dady made a spectacular catch to thwart a third-inning rally. Shortstop D.J. Swatscheno caught a fly ball and threw a strike to first baseman J.L. Carranza to complete a double play in the second inning. Chad Rose led the offense with a two-run home run, scoring Swatscheno.
    Broward County Roller Hockey

    West Pembroke Pines 13 and younger team (7-1-1) defeated visiting Weston II, 15-0, May 5 to end the regular season. Ricky Pina had four goals to lead the locals. Chad Stultz, Jason and Stephen Stepp and Jason Roncek each scored two goals.

    Nick Ellis, Darren Kahn and Mike Martin had one goal apiece, and Jeff Stepp made several assists. Goalie Pablo Barg recorded another shutout, receiving stellar play from his defense. West Pembroke Pines begins the playoffs in the first Broward Cup Tournament May 19.

    West Pembroke Pines Optimist defeated host Hollywood Hills Cobras April 28. Goalie Marty Dubose made 30 saves for the Cobras. West Pembroke Pines' Stephen Stepp scored four goals. Twins Jeff and Jason Stepp had three each. Goalie Pablo Barg played well, posting the shutout.

  • Weston's 13 and younger unit defeated visiting Hollywood, 8-2, April 21. Mark St. Thomas and John Usehoff each scored for the Cobras. This is the debut season for roller hockey in Hollywood.
    Sunrise Youth Ice Hockey Association

    The River Rats defeated the Vipers, 4-1, to win the championship in the Senior Division (ages 13 and older) of the Sunrise Youth Ice Hockey Association at Sunrise Ice Skating Center last month. Michael Arnel scored two goals, and Vince Grenier and Scott Wondrely had one goal apiece. Greg Waxman scored the Vipers' lone goal.

  • The Bulls placed third with an exciting 6-5 victory over the Wolverines. Mike Gagnon led the Bulls with three goals. Jeff Grayboyes added two, and Matt Marcoux scored one. For the Wolverines, James Ryder scored twice, and Khoung Phan, Josh Rimer and Matt Swerdlow each had one goal.
