NEW DELHI -- Hindu nationalists who for decades have been at the edge of India's power circle lobbied Saturday for the chance to lead the nation's next government. For only the second time in India's history, no party captured an outright majority in the general elections. The long-dominant Congress Party finished second, clearing the way for either the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party or a coalition of low-caste socialists.

SRI LANKA -- At least 50 rebels and 14 soldiers were killed Saturday in the heaviest fighting in nearly two months in eastern Sri Lanka, the military said. The fighting reportedly began when nearly 200 Tamil guerrillas ambushed a military patrol on a road 125 miles east of Colombo, the capital.
