SOME FATAL JETLINER CRASHES IN THE UNITED STATES SINCE 1985:

  • Sept. 8, 1994: USAir jetliner crashes on approach to Pittsburgh International Airport, killing all 132 on board.

  • July 2, 1994: USAir jetliner crashes near North Carolina's Charlotte-Douglas Airport in a thunderstorm, killing 37 of 57 aboard.

  • March 22, 1992: USAir jetliner crashes on takeoff in a snowstorm at La Guardia Airport in New York City, killing 27.

  • March 3, 1991: United Airlines jetliner loses control and crashes near Colorado Springs, Colo., airport, killing 25.

  • Feb. 1, 1991: Thirty-four die at Los Angeles International Airport in a fiery runway collision between a Skywest Fairchild Metroliner commuter plane and a USAir Boeing 737.

  • Jan. 25, 1990: An Avianca Boeing 707 crashes in Cove Neck, N.Y., after running out of fuel. Of the 159 aboard, 73 die.

  • July 19, 1989: United Airlines DC-10 crashes while attempting an emergency landing at Sioux City, Iowa, killing 112 of 296 aboard.

  • Aug. 31, 1988: Delta Air Lines Boeing 727 crashes and burns at Dallas Fort-Worth Airport, killing 14.

  • Dec. 7, 1987: Pacific Southwest BAe 146 jet crashes near Paso Robles, 175 miles northwest of Los Angeles; 43 die. Gunfire is heard on the cockpit recorder, and authorities believe a vengeful ex-employee of PSA's parent company caused the crash.

  • Nov. 15, 1987: Continental Airlines DC-9 crashes on takeoff at Stapleton International Airport, Denver; 28 die.

  • Aug. 16, 1987: Northwest Airlines MD-80 crashes on takeoff at Detroit Metropolitan Airport; 156 die.

  • Aug. 31, 1986: Aeromexico DC-9 collides with small plane over Los Angeles suburb of Cerritos; 82 killed, including 15 on the ground.

  • Sept. 6, 1985: Midwest Express Airlines DC-9 crashes after takeoff from Milwaukee's Mitchell Field; 31 killed.

  • Aug. 2, 1985: Delta Air Lines Lockheed L-1011 crashes at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport; 137 killed.
