T his is a day celebrated around the nation, a day held in particular regard by every politician who hopes to succeed in this fall's elections. On this day we should wish all those politicians a Happy Mother's-gap Day.

Florida House races: Democrats optimistic
B efore I get to the news, a bit of historical context: The last time Democrats increased their numbers in Florida's congressional delegation, about the only Japanese cars driven in suburbia were called Datsuns and the big auto news was that Volkswagen was adding a new model, the Rabbit, to its line of Beetles.

A s a native New Englander growing up amid stories of Paul Revere and Old Concord Bridge, I was taken aback last week to learn about a controversy stirring at an elementary school in Longwood, a comfortable Orlando suburb, that ignited when the students chose a Minuteman as the school symbol.
