IN ASTRONOMY

  • Today: In the early dawn, the Great Square of Pegasus (Flying Horse) hangs above the eastern horizon. In the south, Jupiter glows above the Sagittarian ``teapot.'' Dim Comet Hale-Bopp cruises to the upper left of the bright planet. Huge Scorpius crawls across the southwest.

  • Monday: Before sunrise, the waning crescent Moon descends to meet Saturn rising in the southeast. At dusk, Venus, the regal Evening Star, now sparkles closer to the northwestern horizon, nestled between two constellations: Auriga the Charioteer on the right and the Gemini Twins to the upper left. Taurus the Bull is chased by Orion the Hunter and his Big Dog below the western horizon.

  • Wednesday: About a half-hour before sunrise, the old Moon meets ruddy Mars smoldering on the northeastern horizon.

  • Friday: The New Moon occurs at 7:46 a.m. in Taurus.


  • Friday: Join the comet craze at FIU. Images of blazing Comet Hyakutake taken by Southern Cross astrophotographers. Meet Dr. Don Parker of Coral Gables, whose photos and images appear frequently in national astronomy magazines and journals. A gallery of photos will shown at the FIU Astronomy Center, Room No. 145 in the (CP) Physics Building. At the University Park campus, at 1400 SW. 107th Ave and SW 8th St. At 8 p.m. Free.
