Sharu Mundell-Williams, a senior at Coral Gables High, won first place in the National Conference of Christians and Jews First Annual Media Awards Contest. Senior Manny Navarro from Braddock High placed second in the contest. Sharu will receive a $500 scholarship and Manny will receive a $200 scholarship. Both students will be honored at a luncheon later this month.
The following MAST Academy students earned distinction at the State Science Fair: Lance Hall, Seth Mondschein and Maria Spielman, first place; Edward Prieto, second place; Noel Mack, third place; and David Bernstein, fourth place. Edward Prieto's research on asthma in adolescents has been published in the April 1996 American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. International Student Exchange: ASSE International Student Exchange is seeking local host families for 15- to 18-year-old students from various countries. Each student is fully insured and brings their own spending money. Families may select their exchange student from applications including biographical essays, photos and transcripts. The JROTC is sponsoring the Third ``All Dade County JROTC Drill Meet'' at 8 a.m. May 18. An awards ceremony will be at 2:30 p.m. There will be a chess tournament at 9:30 a.m. May 18. Registration begins at 8 a.m. A $5 entry fee is required. All events are at the school, 10655 SW 97th Ave. Call 271-3311. Palmetto Feeder Pattern: There will be a meeting at 7:20 p.m. Tuesdayin the media center at Palmetto Middle, 7351 SW 128th St. Feeder Pattern principals will be guest speakers and officers for 1996-97 will be elected. There will be a meeting for parents of students who will attend Whigham at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Gulfstream Elementary cafeteria, 20900 SW 97th St. Other parents who live within the new school's boundaries also are invited.
