Win moves Natcom Marketing into first for Khoury Midgets

ehind the pitching of Mike Anderson and Jarrod Labasco, Natcom Marketing clinched first place in the Hollywood Hills Khoury League Baseball Midget Division (ages 11 and 12) with a 14-4 victory over Flicker Lite May 2.

Matt Kanaskie sparked the offense, driving in three runs, and Emilian Grouev had a key two-run single in the sixth inning. Anderson and Labasco each had two hits and combined to score six runs.

Labasco was the winning pitcher, improving to 8-2. Natcom Marketing finished the regular season with an impressive 19-2 record. In the Broward County tournament -- which begins May 17 in Plantation -- Natcom is a Class A representative, competing against other first-place teams from other cities.

  • Shenanigans edged the Rockies, 5-4, in the Atom Division (ages 7 and 8) May 3. Pat Utter hit a three-run home run over the center field fence, scoring Josh Bolson and Shamus Taylor in the top of the first inning.

    Taylor was the winning pitcher, striking out nine in three innings. He allowed two runs on two hits and one walk. Reliever Matt Phillips entered the game with the bases full of Rockies, one out and Shenanigans holding a 4-3 lead. Phillips struck out the next two batters to end the rally.

    Phillips finished the game, allowing one run and striking out three, including the last batter with the tying run on base. He received solid defensive support from Utter at third base, shortstop Kyle Karl and first baseman Dennis Raben. Phillips also had two hits. For the Rockies, Ian Slater hit two home runs.

  • In the Bantam Division (ages 9 and 10), T&T Fire defeated Adamo Auto Repair, 11-3. Winning pitcher Tom Dudash allowed one run on two hits and one walk, while striking out three. Reliever Jimmy Sigman pitched three innings with three strikeouts. Alan Dickerson and Dudash each went two for three and scored two runs. Anthony
    Gaita was two for three, and Patrick Esmarais scored twice. Eric Schmura had hit first hit of the season, an RBI single.

  • Phil Marro was the winning pitcher in relief as the Bracers defeated the Sound Advice Pirates, 10-6. Marro, a left-hander, struck out six in three innings. He also hit a double and scored a run. Starting pitcher Shawn Vickers tossed three innings, striking out six. John Wolf sparked the offense with two triples and two runs, and Brian Evans had a hit and scored twice. Marvin Simeon scored a run, and first baseman Frank Esposito tagged a runner out on a Marro pick-off.
    Hollywood Hills Fast-Pitch

    Winning pitcher Michelle Obel struck out 14 batters in six innings to lead the Pirates 12 and under team over Davie No. 1, 11-5. Catcher Kelly DosSantos, playing injured, had a strong game behind the plate. Shortstop Marni Mankuta had two hits including a triple. The Pirates improved to 15-1.
    Broward County Roller Hockey

    West Pembroke Pines Optimist defeated the host Hollywood Hills Cobras 13-and-younger team April 28. Goalie Marty Dubose made 30 saves for the Cobras. West Pembroke Pines' Stephen Stepp scored four goals. Twins Jeff and Jason Stepp had three each. Goalie Pablo Barg played well posting the shutout.

  • Weston's 13-and-younger unit defeated visiting Hollywood, 8-2, April 21. Mark St. Thomas and John Usehoff each scored for the Cobras. This is the debut season for roller hockey in Hollywood.
    Hollywood Soccer

    Registration is open for the Hollywood Wildcats Youth Soccer Club's 1996-97 in-house recreational league. The program is open to boys and girls ages 4 to 12. The cost is $70 per child. For information or to register, call 929-2287.
