Mendez Montenegro MENDEZ MONTENEGROEx-leader of GuatemalaAssociated Press GUATEMALA CITY -- Julio Cesar Mendez Montenegro, president of Guatemala in 1966-1970, died of a heart attack at his home Tuesday, family members said. He was 80.President Alvaro Arzu declared a three-day national mourning period. Mendez Montenegro was seeking the appointment of rector of the San Carlos National University when his brother, a presidential candidate, died Oct. 31, 1965. He took his brother's place on the ticket and was elected. He later served as Guatemalan ambassador to Mexico and dean of the law school at San Carlos. Survivors include his wife, Sara de La Hoz de Mendez Montenegro, and four children. |
